After you have finished your medical degree from abroad at a medical college/university which is recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI), you will have to take a licensing test which is named as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) or also known as MCI Screening Test.
The test is one of the mandatory requirements for an Indian citizen who has a medical degree from a college outside India to practice medicine in the country. The screening test was introduced in 2002 as a qualifying examination for Indian students obtaining their medical degrees from countries other than India. Indian doctors holding basic medical degrees from any country have to take the MCI screening test. The Medical School should have been listed in the WHO international directory of Medical Schools.
The MCI screening test for foreign medical graduates is conducted annually twice in June and December. The students generally return back on completion of MBBS course in the month of June every year and generally go through the crash course for MCI screening test up to September. They prepare from the next 2 months on their own and give their first attempt in December. This is a licensure examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India and one can check the website of FMGE by clicking here.
MCI Screening Test or FMGE Test is based on 19 subjects covered in MBBS in India course. Also, AIPGMEE (NEET for PG courses) is based on the same 19 subjects. Accordingly, if the Indian students prepare for MCI screening Test while studying MBBS abroad, they are able to crack the entrance test for MD / MS in India.
Students should clear this Exam after returning back to India. Sometimes, there are students who are not able to pass this exam after returning back. However, you must understand that it is because the students are not guided properly and not provided with the MCI screening Test coaching while they study abroad. But countries like Georgia, Ukraine, China, Russia gives FMGE exam coaching to all its students for MBBS study in abroad, when guided properly. Accordingly, it has 100% guarantee of passing all the students!
